Tau History

The fall semester of 1997 marked the beginning of a revolution at Baylor University. Six Young men decided to re-open a lost chapter of Phi Lambda Alpha on campus. Their names were Craig Bowman, Jacob Davila, Bobby Herren, Marcus Jasso, Carlos Riojas, and Hector Silva. Their purpose was to unite and equip Latin American students and those interested in the Latin American culture to actively serve Baylor University and the community of Waco, Texas.  More importantly, the founders sought to create a brotherhood of men that promote the social, personal, and cultural dimensions of each individual. On September 30, 1997, Phi Lambda Alpha had its first meeting on campus. Their faculty sponsor was Dr. Richard Duran, a French Professor, who fully supported the group’s revolutionary efforts. The founding brothers created the organization’s ideals, governing system, bi-laws, and various traditions still present today.

In the spring semester of 1998, the organization made its first big stride by enlisting an inaugural pledge class of twelve new men, known as the Alpha Class. Their entrance into the brotherhood would test the club’s strength. Nevertheless, they would become vital assets in ensuring the organization’s survival.

A year later, various events shifted the tides of the revolution. PLA accepted six more brothers in the spring of 1999. These new additions, known as the Beta Class, would become the last line to pledge under Phi Lambda Alpha at Baylor.  Fate had other plans.

In February of 1999, the brotherhood received an e-mail from a brother of Phi Iota Alpha, Ed “Santo” Sazo.  He had stumbled across one of the founder’s websites and discovered the club’s existence.  Phi Lambda and Sigma Iota had merged in 1931, to form Phi Iota Alpha, Fraternity Inc., the oldest Latino fraternity in existence.  Phi Iota Alpha had closed down its doors for a brief period of time, but was once again beginning to flourish on a national level.  The Baylor club of Phi Lambda Alpha shared its name and heritage in Phi Iota Alpha history!

Negotiations commenced amongst the organizations, led by Phi Iota Alpha National Secretary General, Moises “Sonriente” Vejil.  On April 10, 1999, history repeated itself.  PLA members Davila, Riojas, and Bowman traveled to Binghampton, New York, and signed an agreement to merge with the national body of Phi Iota Alpha.  In a truly historic moment, the Baylor club pledged its allegiance and became the Tau Chapter of Phi Iota Alpha.
